As Seen On

Well, the blog has certainly seen a flurry of new visitors in the past few days.  Last week, on a whim, I quickly submitted my tutorial to Apartment Therapy.  They liked it and posted a write-up two days later.

For the record, I had nothing to do with what they wrote.  I liked the angle they chose, but they posted the wrong Besta shelf!  Now,  if you're going to submit anything to Apartment Therapy, you have to have thick skin because the comments and opinions can be somewhat brutal.  Thankfully I've never had a negative comment before, but not this time.  But it wasn't my fault.  The culprit was the silly shelf that they posted at the top.  Anyway, it made for some interesting reading.  Apartment Therapy readers really take other peoples' safety seriously.  People thought I was being negligent for building a banquette out of something so obviously flimsy.  Let me tell you, I'm no dummy and I did my research.  The units I used are a lot stronger than the one pictured.  Anyway, that's by-the-by.  On the most part, once I had straightened out the confusion on the base units, people seemed to like my banquette.

The next day it was featured on Centsational Girl in the BOTB (Best of the Blogosphere) series, and has garnered some more positive reviews!  Yay!  You can see that link here.

And for all of you wondering whether it is strong enough to hold adults, here it is in action.

It was out semi-annual "tour de tapas".  We had 10 people seated around that table (6 on the banquette), and I can happily say the bench did not collapse!

And here was what was happening on the other side of the room.

Cheers!

  1. Awww bless ya! Goodness, they really cocked that up didn't they! I can't believe they didn't change the picture either after all that - pfft. When they posted my kitchen, their write up was a bit misleading as well but hey ho, the gods of AT just do what they like! Nevermind, it's great that after you explained, the tide shifted and lots of people loved it. I think you did a cracking job :) xxx

    1. Thanks Kimberly! I guess any kind of publicity is good publicity, right?

  2. I found your blog through your banquette and Room for Color entries on AT. You have a lovely home! And yes, the readers on AT get very... worked up sometimes. I once posted how excited I was to find a product that I'd been hunting for that they'd blogged about and got blasted by commenters for needing to calm down. Ah well.

    1. Yes, Robin I guess the AT readers think that they can be rude because they are somewhat anonymous. Anyway, thanks for the lovely comment. I'm sad I didn't make it in to the top 5 this year for Room for Color, but I didn't tell any of my friends or try and chase down votes. C'est la vie.

  3. Not sure if my last comment published? ...but can you tell me how you secured the banquette backs to the wall. I'm going to try this as my next house project. I love how yours turned out!!

    1. I haven't hung them on the walls, they're just resting on top of the bench seat. I did however buy some flush mount hangers that I haven't installed yet. Good luck with your project!

    2. Thanks Suzanne - 1 last question (promise). Did you fasten the banquette seats to the benches or are they just resting on them like the backs?

    3. I did not fasten the seats to the benches; it makes it easier to clean behind. The benches sometimes shift a little, but not much.
